功績の褒賞に申し替えて、父の首を取らなかったことを訴えたが、お許しがなかったので、輝政はまた福島左衛門大夫正則と相談し、重ねて二人一緒に嘆願申し上げた。そうしたところ、大隅守嘉隆の死刑を免じられた上、守隆の所領の地を多数加えてくださった《割書：二万石を加えられ、本領と合わせて五万五千石》。守隆の喜びは限りなく、やがて新宮に使者を立てて、この旨を密かに告げたところ、嘉隆は自ら首を刎ねて死んだのは無残なことであった《割書：年五十九歳○世に伝わるところ》
《割書：嘉隆が自害したことは、初め長門守守隆が会津の御陣に従った時、家の老臣豊岡五郎右衛門という者に鳥羽の城を守らせ、嘉隆が石田に組みして城を奪おうとした時、豊岡もさすがに敵し難くして嘉隆に明け渡した。そもそも兵が城を守るというのは、かかる事のためにこそあるのに、いかに主君のお父上なりとも、あまりに穏便な豊岡の振る舞いかな、と同僚たちが内々につまらないことだと囁いた。これを口惜しく思ったのであろうか、嘉隆の在り処を密かに尋ねると》

《割書：熊野の奥に隠れ住んでいると聞いて、新宮の城に行き向かい、安房守氏善に付いて「長門守殿が内府にお嘆きがあって、今度の褒賞に申し替えて嘉隆の罪を宥められ、某が急いで参り向かい、お供申すべき」旨の使者として来ておりますと申したところ、嘉隆は運が尽きていたのか、やすやすと騙されて豊岡を供にして本国に向かった。豊岡は道中で嘉隆に向かい「もはやことは君のご事情は内府の怒りが深く、当家はすでに滅ぼされるべきお計らいがあって、お子孫の後の栄華を期し給うべし」と言ったところ、嘉隆は「それなら我が首を取って徳川殿へ参らせよ」とて腹を切ったので、豊岡は首を取って帰る途中、伊勢の星崎の茶屋で嘉隆罪免の御教書に行き会った。豊岡は案に相違して非常に驚いたが、さらぬ体に装い、守隆に参って「某が熊野に参って大隅守殿のお供仕るべき旨を申して候うに、いかに親子の仲なりとも一度敵となって生きて再び対面に及ぶべきことは叶うまじき」旨を仰せ給いしほどに、何か苦しく候べきとさまざまに諌め奉ったが、それならばとて帰らせ給った。しかし既に本国に近づかせ給うにつけても、なお御心の内はやすらぎ給わなかったのであろうか、密かに御腹を召された後、某を召して御首を給るべき旨を仰せ候ったので、力なく仰せに従って候う」と真実らしく語って父の首を差し出したところ、長門守も大いに呆れて為す術なく、徳川殿へこの旨を申して父の首を参らせた。徳川殿も「不憫の次第なり」と仰せがあって首をお返し下された。年を経た後に豊岡の所業がことごとく》

So Terumasa again consulted with Fukushima Saemon-no-dayū Masanori, and the two petitioned together once more. Thereupon, the death sentence of Ōsumi-no-kami Yoshitaka was commuted, and moreover, many additional lands were added to Moritaka's domains {{marginal note: 20,000 koku were added, making a total of 55,000 koku including his original holdings}}. Moritaka's joy was boundless, and he soon sent a messenger to Shingū to secretly convey this news, whereupon Yoshitaka cut off his own head and died, which was truly pitiful {{marginal note: aged 59 years ○ as is told in the world}}.

His colleagues whispered among themselves that although soldiers guard castles for such purposes, regardless of being the master's father, Toyooka's conduct was excessively accommodating and disappointing. I remonstrated with him in various ways, but he decided to return. However, as he approached his home province, his heart still found no peace, and after secretly committing seppuku, he summoned me and ordered me to take his head."
