善の道を後と延る族多きが故に先此迷ひを明むべし人ありていふべきは
右の道理明かにして善にこみたる事なければ全く行ふまじきといふには
非ず今其勤めをせずといふとも行ふべき時あるべしと是に付て＊さんと

思いでいれば、たとえ善を行わなくとも救われるであろうと思い、また人によっては世俗の重要事に絡め取られ、むなしい栄華を楽しんで、神が約束してくださる快楽にも代えようと思う者もある。これらは皆、天魔の仕業として人の心を盲目にし、一生罪の奴とするための謀略である。中でも決定的な迷いというのは、善の道を後回しにする者が多いことであるから、まずこの迷いを明らかにすべきである。ある人が言うには「その道理が明らかで善に励むことでなければ、全く行うつもりはないというわけではない。今その務めをしなくとも、行うべき時があるだろう」と。これについて聖アウグスティヌスがご自身の体験を告白されることを聞け。まだ善の道に入られなかった以前、神に申し上げたことには「どうか主よ、今少しお待ちください。やがて私は罪を捨て、世を厭うでしょう」と言われたのと違わず、悪人も今日を明日へと延ばし、時から時へと移り行くけれども、いつを期限とする定めを知らない。これは誠に大いなる天魔の謀略である。
