をひては赦し給ふべしとの御約束はありといへども明日の命をば御
約束なされぬ者也爰に＊せざりよといふ学者の云く人ありて齢衰へて
後退悪修善の薬を用ゆべしと是何ぞ墓なき人の身として一日も
命の危からずといふ事ありやと誠に此迷ひをもて如何ほどのあにまか
いんへるのに堕落しけるぞ＊さんるうかすのゑはんぜりよに顕し給ふ福人と
いふも此迷ひより堕獄せると見えたり彼福人の持ける知行一年の
田地満作なるを以て彼は心におもへらくかほどの福有を何とがすべき今
持蔵を壊ちて尚大なる蔵を作り其内に入べしと然じて其身は云く
数年の畜へ莫太なれば是を以て遊び戯れ珍物は山海の美食を調ゆ
べしと此思ひ未終らざる内に忽ち一ッの声聞て如何に狂人汝があにま
今夜ぬき出さるべし畜へたりしほどの物は是誰が為ぞとありけるよし
見えたり去ば御主 ds の御進退にて在ます時日を人の身としてわが
物のごとく思ふ迷ひに勝りたる狂人あらんや見よ如此の迷ひを以ていんへるの
におちし族多きが故に何ぞ前車の覆るを見て後車の戒めとせ

騙されたのではないか。聖グレゴリウスが仰せのように、悪人が後悔するについては赦してくださるという御約束はあるけれども、明日の命については御約束なさらないものである。ここに聖チェザリオという学者が言うには「人があって年老いてから退悪修善の薬を用いるべしというのは、これ何と頼りない人の身として一日も命が危なくないということがあろうか」と。誠にこの迷いをもってどれほどの霊魂が地獄に堕落したことか。聖ルカス福音書に示してくださる富人というのも、この迷いより地獄に堕ちたと見えている。その富人の持つ領地が一年の田畑が豊作であることをもって、彼は心に思ったことには「これほどの幸福を何とすべきか。今持っている蔵を壊して、なお大きな蔵を作り、その中に入れよう」と。そして自分に言うには「数年分の蓄えが莫大であるから、これをもって遊び戯れ、珍しい物や山海の美食を調えよう」と。この思いがまだ終わらないうちに、忽ち一つの声が聞こえて「何と愚かな者よ、お前の魂は今夜取り去られるであろう。蓄えたこれほどの物は、これは誰のためか」とあったようすが見えている。さて主なる神の御裁量でいらっしゃる時日を、人の身として自分の物であるかのように思う迷いに勝る狂人があろうか。見よ、このような迷いをもって地獄に落ちた者が多いので、何故前車の覆るのを見て後車の戒めとしないのか。エクレジアスティコの御教えに従って、速やかにこれを努めよ。「主に立ち帰ることを遅らせるな。日から日へと延ばすな。突然にその怒りが来るからである。そして復讐の時に」

been deceived? As Saint Gregory says, while there is a promise that God will forgive evil people when they repent, He has made no promise regarding tomorrow's life. Here a scholar called Saint Caesarius says: "If someone says they should use the medicine of abandoning evil and cultivating good after their years have declined, how can such an unreliable person's body have even one day when life is not in danger?" Truly, how many souls have fallen into hell through this delusion! Even the rich man revealed in Saint Luke's Gospel appears to have fallen into hell through this very delusion. This rich man, seeing that his landholdings had produced a bumper crop that year, thought in his heart: "What shall I do with such great fortune? Now I will tear down my existing storehouse and build an even larger one to put it in." And he said to himself: "Since I have accumulated vast stores for many years, I will use these to play and make merry, preparing delicacies and fine foods from mountain and sea." Before this thought was finished, suddenly a voice was heard saying: "You fool! Tonight your soul will be taken from you. All these things you have stored up—whose will they be?" Thus it appears. When time and days are under the providence of our Lord God, could there be a madman greater than one who, as a mere human, thinks of them as his own possessions? Behold, since many have fallen into hell through such delusion, why do we not take warning from seeing the front cart overturn to guard the rear cart? According to the teaching of Ecclesiasticus, practice this speedily: "Do not delay in turning to the Lord, and do not postpone from day to day, for suddenly His wrath will come, and in the time of vengeance..."
