(Continuation of the Kyōgen "Shōma" [Bell Demon] from the previous page) After a moment, the girl appeared and came running. When the three monks questioned her, they all pretended not to know anything, and tried to tease and pacify her so she would leave. But the girl could not find Matsuju, and cried out as if driven mad, then rushed outside the gate to search further for him. The monks, thinking they were now safe, tried to lower the bell in question. But when the sound of this echoed back as a mountain echo, the woman immediately came running back, her hair disheveled and her expression transformed. Crying "My beloved must be inside this bell!" she entered into the bell. The head monk was startled, and together with the other monks surrounded the bell and prayed over it. Perhaps due to the power of their religious practice, the bell rose of its own accord up to the belfry, and the woman, now manifesting the visage of a demoness, struck at it with the bell striker. The monks, not flinching in the slightest, continued to pray without wavering. Then suddenly the sky grew overcast, and thunder and lightning raged terribly. The woman at that moment became an evil demon, seized Matsuju, and ran off with him. This too constitutes one act of kyōgen. These two stories are said to be based on actual events that occurred throughout the Ryukyu kingdom more than one hundred years ago. Apart from these, all other performances are Chinese (Tang) opera and kyōgen productions. They have also transmitted Japanese sarugaku, and perform mai-bayashi and the like. They greatly enjoy Gidayū-bushi recitation and are said to be quite adept at performing michiyuki sections such as "Ashikari." ○Calligraphy (Shohō) For calligraphy, they use the Japanese Ōhashi school and Tamaoki school styles. Katakana and hiragana are in common use among all classes throughout the country. Correspondence sent to and from the Satsuma domain is uniformly in the form of tate-jō (vertical letter) and neji-jō (twisted letter), using the epistolary style beginning with "Ippitsu keijō" (a brief note). When writing, they do not lean on the desk; they hold the paper in the left hand and write with the arm suspended (chūdame style), which is the same as in Japan. ○Buddhist Sects (Shūha) The monks of this country are not permitted to go to China to receive the transmission of Buddhist teachings, and instead come to Satsuma to study the Dharma. Their robes are of a reddish-yellow (kaba) color, and they wear an additional garment over the kesa (surplice). This garment resembles a waistcoat and is called "danzoku." Their hats resemble the cap hats worn by Qing Chinese and are said to be made of felt. As for their sects, only Rinzai Zen and Shingon are practiced — this is noted in the Chūzan Denshin-roku. ○Agriculture (Kōsaku) The fields are plowed and sown between September and October. Around October and November, when the seedlings emerge from the water, they are transplanted to the main paddies when the weather is favorable. During this season, heavy rains fall in their proper time, thunder resounds, earthworms make their sound, and the climate is just like spring. From there into the following year, they weed in spring and harvest in the fifth month of summer. (Immediately after, wheat is sown in the same fields and harvested within the same year.) By the sixth month, great storms frequently arise, driving rains lash horizontally, and all fruits fall from the trees, so the harvest must be brought in early...
