人間一生（にんけんいつしやう）妓陽（きやう）のごとしせんとなり
あくとなりまづこん日はこれきりといふ
まくなるへし
〽一しやうをきとあいらくにさい
しきしかほをこのよにあらひ
ぬるかな此きやうかはいかいし
百 万（まん）ほうが終世（しうせい）なるよし
つく〳〵これをおもふに水はほうゑん
のうつものにしたかふといふ#1ふるき
たとへもおろそかにおもふへからす
ばかさるゝものもきつねばかす
ものもきつねみな〳〵きつねの
よのなかにてせいはぜんなりと
いへともきつねといへる
くせものいでゝきつねを
たぶらかしこれかならす
きつねなればこそきつねになる
のきつねあれはひやつこあり
はかすとおもへばはかさるゝ
はてはのなかの□てほうす

現代語訳
人間一生は陽炎のごとし、善となり悪となり、まず今日はこれきりという幕となるべし。
〽一生を機と愛楽に彩り、しかも顔をこの世に洗い流すかな。この陽炎可愛いかな、百万法が終世なる由。
つくづくこれを思うに、水は方円の器に従うという古い譬えも疎かに思うべからず。騙されるものも狐、騙すものも狐、皆々狐の世の中にて、性は善なりと言えども、狐という曲者が出て狐を騙す。これ必ず狐なればこそ狐になるの狐あれば、奴あり。騙すと思えば騙される。果ては世の中の［？］て放蕩、［？］色事をしても一重は織の工面もできず、どうもこうも仕方がなくて部屋子になれば、朝寝を恋ては飽きられ、我一人通の気でもせにかなければ、かくのごとくの捨て放蕩。
ただ真の通と申すは流行稲荷になり、小さな社でも通を得たる狐なり。よくよく考えてもご覧じろ、世の中の狐様。

Human life is like a mirage—becoming good, becoming evil, and finally ending with the curtain of "this is it for today."
〽Coloring one's entire life with opportunity and pleasure, washing one's face clean in this world. How lovely this mirage is, as a million teachings last for eternity.
Contemplating this deeply, we must not take lightly the old saying that "water follows the shape of its container." Those who are deceived are foxes, those who deceive are foxes—in this world of foxes, though we say human nature is good, cunning creatures called foxes emerge and deceive other foxes. Since they are necessarily foxes, they become foxes. Where there are foxes, there are servants. When you think you're deceiving, you get deceived. In the end, the world's [...] debauchery—even engaging in affairs, one cannot manage even a single layer of weaving. With no other recourse, becoming a kept woman, oversleeping in love until abandoned, if one cannot maintain the spirit of a true connoisseur alone, such is this abandoned debauchery.
But what we call a true connoisseur becomes a popular Inari deity—even in a small shrine, it is a fox that has gained expertise in the ways of love. Think carefully and observe the fox spirits of this world.
