といへるものありけりおやのいさめ
人のそしりもきゝいれず
たゞつうにのみ心をはこび
けるがあるときまつち山
夕ぐれこへて日本づゝみ
にかゝりそですりいなりの
まへをとをりけるがわが
こゝろにもおれほど
の男大つうはある
まいとすこしじまん
のこゝろよりだん〳〵
しやれがあがりいまでは大つう
一二をあらそふ人となりける
こそうたてける
そのころまつさきのきつねかれが
みそをあげるをにくくおもひけるか
たゞでもいくまいときつね
こんたんをおこして
しあんを

現代語訳
狐が「かあこんこん」と
鳴くということは俺が始めた
こん〳〵
昔、男で夜朝（やちょう）と
いう者がいた。親の戒めも
人の非難も聞き入れず、
ただ遊女遊びにのみ心を奪われて
いたが、ある時松茸山を
夕暮れに越えて日本堤に
差し掛かり、袖擦稲荷の
前を通りかかった。その時自分の
心の中でも、俺ほど
の男で大通はいない
だろうと少し自慢する
気持ちから、だんだん
洒落が上達し、今では大通の
一、二を争う人となった
ことが憎らしく思われた。
その頃真っ先の狐が、彼が
見栄を張るのを憎く思ったのか、
ただでは済むまいと狐が
魂胆を起こして
思案を
惑わし
た。

英語訳
The fox's cry of "kaa-kon-kon"
is something I started
kon-kon
Long ago, there was a man called
Yacho (Night and Morning).
Ignoring his parents' admonitions
and people's criticism,
he devoted his heart solely to
pleasure quarters. One time, crossing
Matsutake Mountain at dusk,
he reached Nihon Zutsumi and
passed in front of Sodesuri Inari
shrine. At that moment, thinking
to himself that there was probably
no greater connoisseur (otsu) than
himself, with a somewhat boastful
heart, his wit gradually improved,
and he had become one who now
competed for first or second place
among the great connoisseurs—
how detestable this seemed.
At that time, the foremost fox,
perhaps finding his showing off
hateful, thought this wouldn't
go unpunished, and the fox
harbored a scheme
to confuse
his judgment.
