現代語訳

筆

筆は鹿の毛を用いて作られている。軸が短く、中国の筆と比べるとかなり短く、わずかに四寸余りの長さである。竹の軸は蘆に似ており、軽いことを重視している。軸の末端には現地の文字が書かれた小さな札が付いている。筆の帽子にはすべて小さな開口部がある。この国の人々が文字を書く時は、みな机に寄りかからず、立ったり座ったりして、紙の端を裏に巻き込み、左手で挟んで手のひらの中で固定し、手首を浮かせて書く。筆に墨を付ける時は、筆を横にして寝かせて巻く。

紙

紙は繭から作られており、きめが細かく堅くて白いものは極めて良質である。黄色で質が粗いものは「事宜紙」と名付けられている。すべて正方形に切って使用し、高麗の繭紙と全く同じである。質の厚いものは紫色に染めて衣服にすることができ、「内用紙」と名付けられている。印花模様があるものは錦のようで極めて美しい。

耕具

鋤や犂はすべて中国のものを模倣しているが、より軽く小さく作られている。高い田は雨水に頼るのみで、低い田は段々に並べて泉水を引いて灌漑している。その江や湖で潮の満ち引きに通じているところはすべて塩分を含んでおり灌漑に使えないため、桔槔や戽斗などの道具はない。

織具

機織り機の形は、座る部分は狭く外側は広く、高さは一尺五、六寸、低い足の部分はわずか三、四寸ほどである。機の前には竹竿を一本立て、下に垂らして引っ張って操作する。梭の長さは四寸余りで、皂莢の角のような形をしている。道具は軽く小さく作られており、地面に座って使うのに便利である。どの家にもこれがあり、芭蕉の繊維と糸を混ぜ合わせて織っている。

Writing Brushes

Writing brushes are made using deer hair. The shaft is short, considerably shorter compared to Chinese brushes, measuring just over four sun in length. The bamboo shaft resembles a reed, prioritizing lightness. At the end of the shaft, there is a small tag with local script written on it. All brush caps have small openings. When people of this country write, they do not lean against a desk; they stand or sit, roll back the end of the paper, clamp it with their left hand and hold it steady in their palm, writing with their wrist suspended. When dipping the brush in ink, they hold it horizontally and roll it while lying flat.

Paper

Paper is made from cocoons. Those with fine texture that are firm and white are extremely good quality. The yellow ones with loose texture are called "jiyi paper." All are cut into square sheets for use, exactly the same as Korean cocoon paper. The thick-textured ones can be dyed purple and made into clothing, called "naiyong paper." Those with printed flower patterns are like brocade and extremely beautiful.

Agricultural Tools

Hoes and plows all imitate Chinese ones but are made lighter and smaller. High fields rely only on rainwater, while low fields are arranged in terraces with spring water channeled for irrigation. Where rivers and lakes connect to tidal waters, all contain salt and cannot be used for irrigation, so there are no tools like well-sweeps or water scoops.

Weaving Tools

The shape of the loom has a narrow seat with a wide exterior, standing one chi and five or six sun high, with the low legs only about three or four sun. In front of the loom stands one bamboo pole, which hangs down and is pulled to operate the mechanism. The shuttle is over four sun long, shaped like a soap pod horn. The tools are made light and small, convenient for sitting on the ground to use. Every household has these, weaving with a mixture of banana fiber and thread.
