これを改革しようとした。衆を集めて議論した。古来よりこのようなものであり、或いは深い意味があって禁忌とするところがあるのかもしれない。急に前の制度を改めるのは不便であるとして、今日に至るまでこれを続けている。市を通り過ぎて見たところ、すべてがそのとおりであった。

市に入る商品は、肩に担ぐ者はいない。大小様々な重い荷物を、すべて頭上に載せる。たとえ大きな甕や束ねた薪でも皆そうである。坂を登り峰を下りながら、首を真っすぐにして袖を引きずって歩く。偏って落とす者はいない。

土地の遊女が市中を歩く時は、暑い月でも衣服の襟の上に、また赤い絹を用いて襟元や脇の間を縁取りする。これによって識別する。古い記録に言う。良家の者が市に入る時は、手に一尺の布を持って自分を区別するという。今でも時々これがある。

婦人が小児を抱く者は、ただ一手で小児の腰を操り、腕に乗せて左右の腰の上に騎乗するように座らせる。見るところ皆そうである。

—this custom. He gathered the people and held discussions. Since it had been this way from ancient times, perhaps there was deep meaning or something to be avoided as taboo. Suddenly changing the former system would be inconvenient, so they have continued it to this day. Passing through the marketplace, I observed that everything was indeed as described.

Goods brought to market are not carried on shoulders by anyone. Large and small heavy loads are all carried on the head. Even large jars and bundles of firewood are carried this way. Going up hills and down ridges, they walk with necks straight and sleeves trailing, with no one dropping their loads to one side.

When local courtesans walk through the marketplace, even in hot months they trim the area around the collar and underarms of their upper garments with red silk. This serves to identify them. Old records say that when people from good families enter the market, they carry a one-shaku length of cloth in their hands to distinguish themselves. This can still occasionally be seen today.

Women carrying small children use only one hand to grasp the child's waist, supporting them on their arm and having them sit astride their left or right hip. All that I observed were like this.
