現代語訳

船

貢船の様式は、おおよそ福州の烏船のようである。船の両脇に櫓を設置し、左右に各二つずつある。船の長さは八丈余り、幅は二丈五、六尺である。前の明の洪武・永楽年間には、皆海船を賜った。後に使臣が自ら工料を備えて、福州で改造することを請願した。今では本国の船大工も、また能く自ら様式通りに造ることができる。その各島間の往来通載の船は、大小問わず皆尖底である。底板は鱗のように重なっている。太平山船は、飾りの欄干を加えているのが特異である。故にこれを図示する。小船は皆独木を刳り抜いて作る。極めて軽快である。村民や漁戸は皆これを用いる。一艘では積載に耐えられない場合は、二艘を並べて使用する。

Ships

The style of tribute vessels is roughly like the wu-ships of Fuzhou. Oars are installed on both sides of the ship, two each on the left and right. The ship is over eight jo long and two jo five to six shaku wide. In the former Ming dynasty during the Hongwu and Yongle eras, sea vessels were all bestowed [by the emperor]. Later, envoys petitioned to provide their own materials and labor and have them rebuilt in Fuzhou. Now the shipwrights of this country can also skillfully build them according to specification on their own. The ships used for transport and communication between the various islands are all pointed-bottom vessels, large and small. The bottom planks overlap like scales. The Taiheizan ships are distinctive for having decorative railings added. Therefore I have illustrated them. Small boats are all made by hollowing out single logs. They are extremely light and nimble. Village people and fishing households all use them. When one boat cannot bear the load, they lash two together for use.
