屋舎

屋を作るには、皆それほど高くしない。海風を避けるためである。地面から必ず三四尺許り離す。地湿を避けるためである。民間で屋を作る際は、一間ごとに瓦屋根を四方に出し、亭子のような様子である。瓦は中国の■瓦のようで、極めて堅厚である。これでなければ颶風（台風）を防ぐことができないからである。煉瓦の壁はない。どの屋も四方に、皆板を挟み設けて壁とする。庭院の中囲いの壁、及び外囲いの壁は、蠣石（サンゴ石）を用いて積み上げて作る。首里の大家の外囲いの壁は、磨削して一面が切り取ったかのようで、極めて堅牢整然としている。地面に煉瓦を敷くことはない。多くは板張りの高床を用い、高さは三四尺許りである。門窓は皆戸枢（蝶番）がない。上下の敷居に皆双溝の道を刻み、その中に門扇を設ける。左右に推し移して、開閉とする。室中は席で草を包み、厚さは寸許り。縁には青

Houses

When constructing houses, they are not built very high in order to avoid sea winds. They are necessarily raised three to four shaku (about 0.9-1.2 meters) from the ground to avoid ground moisture. When common people build houses, they extend tiled roofs in four directions for each room, resembling pavilions. The tiles are like Chinese ■-tiles, extremely strong and thick. Without these, they would not be able to withstand typhoons. There are no brick walls. Around all four sides of every house, boards are set up to serve as walls. For courtyard enclosing walls and outer enclosing walls, they use coral stone to build them up. The outer enclosing walls of great houses in Shuri are polished smooth on one surface as if cut, extremely solid and orderly. There is no brick paving on the ground. They mostly use raised wooden flooring, about three to four shaku high. Doors and windows have no hinges. Both upper and lower sills are carved with double groove tracks, and door panels are set within them. They slide left and right to open and close.
