the axe was without discretion

Commentary:
"Hateful, hateful" is the reverse
of "lovable." Rather than being
stabbed by a disagreeable
person, it would be better to be
struck by a lovable man. On the day
one crosses the barrier where people's eyes meet,
exhausting all techniques and striking—
that would be a desperate stratagem.

At the brushwood gate—
the heat
exchanged for moonlight

Commentary:
If the moon and sun could be
exchanged, then lengthening
the long years even more, and having
one's heartfelt wishes reach their destination—
even lying in the fields,
the mountain ascetic's prayerful vows
reach the sympathetic gods.
