In the grounds of Asakusa Kannon in Musashi Province,
a fox serving the Nishinomiya Inari made pilgrimage
to the Kanzeon of Mii Temple and was temporarily
staying
in Aitsu-ga-hara when
a five-ranked heron living
in a corner
came to visit
and spoke
boastfully
of shape-shifting arts.
【Five-ranked Heron】
First, please transform and
show me something.
No matter how well
you transform your ears and such,
you're just an underling
of Oji Inari with country tricks.
You cannot match
the master of this Inari
Mountain. Also, for training
in transforming into Mikoshi-nyūdō
or preparations,
become
my disciple, hey!
I'll teach you
shape-shifting arts. Why do you look
so displeased
with such a face?
【Fox】
If I let you keep talking, you're
a disgusting arrogant fellow.
Well then,
behold the spirit
of an Edo
dweller!
The fox climbed up
a pine tree,
saying "How's this?
Can your neck
stretch this far?" whereupon
the five-ranked heron said "That's child's play"
and strangled the crawling fox with a rope.

A hunter
seeing this spectacle, intending to shoot
the presumptuous fox
with his gun, takes aim
when Anchin happens to pass by
and encounters the hunter,
giving him
five ryō
of gold
to spare
the fox's
life.
