しる事（こと）絵具（ゑのぐ）のさらにうたがひなし
されば御江戸の四里（より）四方（よほう）を羽箒（ははゞき）の
埃（ほこり）飛歩行（どひあるき）といへども焼筆（やきふで）のすみ〴〵沓（くつ）の跡（あと）
残（のこ）らずしてしばし昼寝（ひるね）の枕（まくら）とせしひぢは
目睫（まつげ）のさき〳〵まで至（いたつ）てくはしくかけ
めぐれる巴瓦（ともへがはら）に巣（す）をくひたるは
げに江戸爵（ゑどすゞめ）と題（だい）するはや
天明六のとし丙午はつ春

現代語訳
知ることができるのは、絵の具（の力）に全く疑いがないからである。
そうであるから、江戸の四里四方を羽箒で掃くような
埃まみれの徒歩での行脚といっても、焼筆の墨のように隅々まで靴の跡を
残すことなく、しばらく昼寝の枕としていた肘は
目のまつげの先々まで、きわめて詳細に描き
巡らされた巴瓦に巣を作ったのは
まことに「江戸爵」と題するのにふさわしい
天明六年丙午の初春

can be known because there is absolutely no doubt in the power of pigments.
Therefore, even if one were to travel on foot through the four ri in all directions around Edo, stirring up dust with a feather broom,
without leaving footprints in every corner like the ink of a burnt brush,
the elbow that served briefly as a pillow for an afternoon nap
has been depicted in exquisite detail down to the very tips of eyelashes,
and what has built its nest in the encircling tomoe roof tiles
is truly worthy of the title "Edo Suzume" (Edo Sparrows).
