They memorialized stating: "We ministers
invested the Ryukyu King, and after completing the ceremonies during the banquet conversation, the King commanded an interpreter to present these words: 'Our country is situated remotely beyond the seas, with crude customs prevailing. In the 25th year of Kangxi, we received Imperial orders to send official students Ruan Weixin and two others to enter school for study. Now we have gained some knowledge of literary education. For these thirty years, we have had no means to petition above, but fortunately Heaven has sent envoy ministers to our country, so we seek to follow the precedent of former envoy Wang Ji who petitioned on our behalf for school entry and study, to clearly express the intention of distant peoples turning toward civilization. If we could again send official students to enter school for study, then Your Majesty's literary education would spread even more widely.' Due to these reasons, they submitted a formal memorial that arrived at the Ministry." Upon examination, in the 23rd year of Kangxi, envoy ministers sent to invest the Ryukyu King, including Hanlin Academy Reviewer Wang Ji and others, conveyed and memorialized to the Ministry the words of the said King Shang Zhen requesting that retainer children be sent to the capital to enter the Imperial Academy for study.
Our Ministry, in accordance with their request, deliberated and submitted a memorial, receiving Imperial orders to comply with the decision as recorded in the files. Now Ryukyu King Shang Jing has devoted his heart to turning toward civilization, and having already stated his renewed request to send official students to enter school for study so that Your Majesty's literary education may spread even more widely, we should grant his request and permit these official students to proceed to the capital to enter the Imperial Academy for study. The appropriate administrative matters should be deliberated again and memorialized when the time comes. Memorialized on the 3rd day of the 8th month of the 59th year of Kangxi, and on the 5th day of this month received Imperial orders to proceed according to the deliberation.
