現代語訳
清太郎は江戸で生活を整えようとしたが、窮屈に育ったため江戸は大変住みにくい所だと思い、五畿内や四国、中国、西国各地を巡り歩いた。四十歳になって二十年ぶりに江戸に下ってくると、日本一の自由自在さに初めて驚いたのも面白い話である。
この四、五年は吉原、品川、深川、新宿の四カ所の馴染みに金を使うことが甚だしく、芸者と名のついた者は男女の区別なく総下座にて「金々先生、他にいないぞや」と言う始末である。
【清太郎の台詞】
「俺ももう女郎買いに飽きた。東西南北の遊廓から名のある遊女を身請けして、女郎買いは当分やめる積もりだ」
【供の台詞】
「早く身請けの御相談がよろしゅうございましょう」
吉原より身請けしたのはお吉、品川より身請けしたのはお品、四ツ谷より身請けしたのはお信、深川はお中。四人の妾に遊廓への足が遠くなった。
この頃は俳諧を始め、芦野屋清太郎の二字を片取りして俳名を芦清と付け、俳諧に熱中している。万句評、小冊子の名開き、年賀、追善等、余すところなく漏らさずの一段と続く性格は変わらなかった。

英語訳
Seitaro tried to settle down in Edo, but having grown up in restrictive circumstances, he found Edo to be a very uncomfortable place and traveled around the five home provinces, Shikoku, Chugoku, and Saigoku regions. When he returned to Edo at age forty after twenty years away, it was amusing that he was amazed for the first time by Japan's greatest freedom.
In the past four or five years, he has spent enormous amounts of money on his regular companions in the four districts of Yoshiwara, Shinagawa, Fukagawa, and Shinjuku. All those called geisha, regardless of gender, sit in the lowest position saying "Gold, gold, master, there's no one else!"
[Seitaro's dialogue]
"I'm already tired of buying prostitutes. I intend to ransom famous courtesans from pleasure quarters in all directions and give up buying prostitutes for the time being."
[Servant's dialogue]
"It would be good to discuss the ransom arrangements soon."
The one ransomed from Yoshiwara was Oyoshi, from Shinagawa was Oshina, from Yotsuya was Oshin, and from Fukagawa was Onaka. With four mistresses, his visits to the pleasure quarters became less frequent.
Recently he has begun composing haikai poetry, taking characters from "Ashino-ya Seitaro" to create the pen name "Assei," and has become absorbed in haikai. His character of participating in everything without exception - ten-thousand verse competitions, booklet publications, New Year celebrations, memorial services, etc. - remained unchanged.
