現代語訳
芦清は慶子が道成寺を舞うのを見て、「私は五十歳なのだから、慶子よりはるかに年上だ。あの程度のことができないということはあるまい」と思い、それから素人狂言に取り掛かった。下屋敷へ芝居の通り舞台を作り、しきりに歌舞伎を催して楽しんだ。
花の外には
松ばかり暮れ染めて
鐘や響くらん
芦清も六十歳に近くなると、素人狂言もあまり馬鹿らしいと気づいて、それから乱舞（能楽）に取り掛かり、また舞台を作って度々能を演じた。これもまた金に飽かせて伝授などを済ませ、能の装束も何一つ不足なく調え、それからよほど見識が高くなった。
清太郎が邯鄲の能を勤める所で、盧生は夢から覚めるのであった。

Assei watched Keiko perform Dōjōji and thought, "Since I am fifty years old, I am much older than Keiko. There's no reason I couldn't do something of that level." From then on, he took up amateur kyōgen. He built a proper stage at his lower residence and frequently held kabuki performances for his enjoyment.

When Assei approached sixty, he realized that amateur kyōgen was rather foolish, so he took up ranbu (Noh dance). He built another stage and frequently performed Noh. Again spending lavishly, he completed the formal training and acquired a complete set of Noh costumes, becoming much more refined in his knowledge.
At the point where Seitaro performs the Noh play "Kantan," Rosei awakens from his dream.
