現代語訳
あしのや清右衛門は息子の清太郎が千両の金を持って家出をして行方が分からなくなったので、気力を失い、他に家を継がせるべき者もいなかったため、手代の代次を養子にして百万両の財産を引き渡し、清右衛門は亡くなってしまった。
さて清太郎は家を出た日を命日と定めて、今日は五十年忌の法事を営み、菩提寺を招いて結構な供養を尽くしている。
【代次の台詞】
私がこの家を継ぎましたのは、今日の仏様（清右衛門）がいらっしゃらないからのことです。千部万部の法事をいたしましても、まだ足りません。今日の仏様も私と同年でございました。
【給仕の女の台詞】
お汁の熱いのをお替りなさいませ。
【菩提寺の坊主の台詞】
百年忌にはご馳走を使うと承りましたが、私もどうか長生きをして、このようなお料理をご馳走で食べたいものです。お気の毒なお心遣い、ご丁寧なお料理でございます。
英語訳
Ashinoya Seiemon lost his strength when his son Seitaro took a thousand ryo and ran away from home, disappearing without a trace. Having no other suitable heir, he adopted his clerk Daiji as his son, transferred his fortune of one million ryo to him, and then Seiemon passed away.
Now, Seitaro has designated the day he left home as the death anniversary, and today he is holding a fiftieth memorial service, inviting the family temple priest and performing an elaborate memorial ceremony.
[Daiji's dialogue]
I inherited this house because today's Buddha (the deceased Seiemon) is no longer with us. Even if I perform thousands upon thousands of memorial services, it would not be enough. Today's Buddha was the same age as I am.
