現代語訳
【代次と清太郎の夢】
代次は番頭や手代、家財道具一式を引き渡し、その他各所にある家屋敷なども全て渡して百万両を補い、貧乏になってしまった。世の中の味気ないこと、まことに夢のようなものだと悟ったので、清太郎も同じく悟りを開き、二人ともに髪を剃り落として修行の旅に出ようと申し合わせる。
百万両を持っている人も、百万両を使い果たしてしまう人も、ともに生まれた時は裸であった。面白いものだ。南無阿弥陀仏。
【右下清太郎の台詞】
「夢から覚めたような」とはこのことか。簡単に能を演じた時の悟ったような顔、今この時になって思い知らされた。
さてさて不思議な夢もあるものだ。夢の中で夢を見て、五十年の栄華を極めて、夢のようなものだと悟り出家したが、栄華も店開きも簡単な能も、みな夢であったのか。

おまえ、今少しの間居眠りをなさいましたが、夢でもご覧になりましたか。まだどうか夢から覚めないような起き方ですね。

[Daiji and Seita-ro's Dream]
Daiji handed over all the head clerks, clerks, and household goods, and also transferred all the houses and estates in various places to make up the one million ryo, becoming impoverished. Realizing that the tasteless affairs of this world are truly like a dream, Seita-ro likewise achieved enlightenment, and both men agreed to shave their heads and set out on a religious pilgrimage.
Those who possess one million ryo and those who squander one million ryo were both born naked. How amusing! Namu Amida Buddha.

So this is what "awakening from a dream" means. That enlightened expression I had when performing noh so casually—I truly understand it now at this moment.
Well, well, what strange dreams there can be. Dreaming within a dream, reaching the heights of fifty years of prosperity, then realizing it was all like a dream and becoming a monk—but were the prosperity, the shop opening, and even the simple noh performance all just dreams?
