今日は心をあらたむればちきさま
善人となるなりされはありがたき
だんきせつほうをしやうもんして
じひぜんごんの心をおこせば
たちところにその
おうのうありて
むねのかゞみに
ほとけうつる
たつた今まで
すまかひを【？】
なしたる心の
おにをおひ出ししんによの月
あきらかにむねのかゝみに
くもりたるぼんほうのくもを
はらふなりたとへありかたき
おしへをきゝてもこゝろさしを
あらためざればのうがきを
よんてくすりをのまぬが
ごとくむせんぞうあくの
やまひはなをらぬとしるべし

かきやうがないゆへよん
ところなくこのしぎだが
かならすうなぎが
ゆめをみていると
おもひつこなし

かゞみにはアヽかたしけ
なひふるさとの北浦へかへつて
おやけうだいにあひまするも
おまへの御かげ此御おんはたとへ
かはやきになりましても
わすれませぬと手を合て
おふくろさまをおがむすがたが
うつる

現代語訳
昨日まで悪い心持ちの人も、今日は心を改めれば直ちに善人となるのである。されば有難い談義説法を聴聞して慈悲善根の心を起こせば、たちどころにその応報があって胸の鏡に仏が映る。たった今まで住まいを汚したる心の鬼を追い出し、真如の月明らかに胸の鏡に曇りたる煩悩の雲を払うのである。たとえ有難い教えを聞いても心持ちを改めざれば、能書きを読んで薬を飲まないのと同じく、無数の罪悪の病はなお治らないと知るべきである。
○うなぎの胸の鏡は書様がないゆえ読むところなく、このように見えるが、必ずうなぎが夢を見ていると思い做すことにしよう。
○うなぎの胸の鏡には「ああかたじけない、故郷の北浦へ帰って親兄弟に会いまするのもお前のお陰、この御恩はたとえ蒲焼になりましても忘れません」と手を合わせて母様を拝む姿が映る。
うなぎが言う：
♪もしお袋様、何を隠しましょう。半田の中で申し交わしためそっこが一匹残っております。せっかくのことにこれもお話しくだされまし。はいはい。
♪世の中に報いということがないことではない。それが嘘ならこの人の胸の鏡をそれ御覧じろ。親の因果が子に報いました。それ御覧しろ、木戸銭はお帰りお帰り。
この女はただうっかりとぼんやりしているゆえ、胸の鏡にもさして込み入った姿は映らず、ちと腹が空いたと見えて焼き団子をしてやりたいという下品の悪い姿が映る。
♪くどくど言い訳をするような疑わしい後ろ向きの人の胸の鏡は理屈に合わぬからごめんよ。
♪亀にうなぎが数々御座る。初手の亀を出すときは諸法無常と泳ぐなり。後の亀を出すときは死生滅法と逃げるなり。そう別れめそっこにうなぎは各別極楽と泳ぐなり。我らも後生の気を変えて蒲焼を食いますまい。
英語訳
Even a person with an evil heart until yesterday becomes a virtuous person immediately upon reforming their heart today. Therefore, if one listens to precious sermons and teachings and cultivates a heart of compassion and good deeds, there will be immediate karmic response and Buddha will be reflected in the mirror of the heart. Having just now driven out the demons of the heart that had defiled one's dwelling, the moon of true nature shines clearly and sweeps away the clouds of earthly desires that had clouded the mirror of the heart. However, even if one hears precious teachings, if one does not reform their heart, it is like reading medical texts but not taking medicine - the illness of countless sins will still not be cured.
○ Since the eel's heart mirror has no writing, there is nothing to read, but it appears this way. We must assume that the eel is surely dreaming.
○ In the eel's heart mirror appears the figure of someone putting their hands together and worshipping their mother, saying: "Ah, how grateful I am! That I can return to my hometown of Kitaura and meet my parents and siblings is thanks to you. This debt of gratitude I will never forget, even if I become grilled eel."
The eel says:
♪ Dear mother, what should I hide? The goby fish we promised to each other in the rice paddy - one remains. Since it's come to this, please tell this story too. Yes, yes.
♪ There is no such thing as no retribution in this world. If that's a lie, then look at this person's heart mirror. The parent's karma has brought retribution to the child. Look there - the admission fee says "go home, go home."
This woman is just absent-mindedly spacing out, so nothing particularly complex appears in her heart mirror - she just seems a bit hungry, and the vulgar, bad image of wanting to make grilled dumplings appears.
♪ The heart mirror of someone suspicious who makes long-winded excuses and turns their back doesn't make sense, so excuse me.
♪ There are many turtles and eels together. When the first turtle comes out, it swims saying "all phenomena are impermanent." When the later turtle comes out, it flees saying "birth and death are the law of extinction." So separately, the goby fish swim with the eel saying "each one has their own paradise." We too should change our mindset about the afterlife and not eat grilled eel.
