現代語訳
そもそも人の心の歪みは人の意見では直らないものである。自分で自分の心に意見しなければ直らないものである。そのように心の歪んだ人の胸の鏡には、自分の心が自分の心を迷わせている姿が映る。されば歌にも
♪心こそ心迷わす心なれ心に心心許すな
これは良い戒めの歌である。
♪家へ帰ろうか、泣こうか、帰ろうか泣こうか♪♪と一つの事を何度も言いながら一町ほど行く間に、心が心を思い入れに縛り付けている。
♪ああ暗い判断だ、こうもあろうか
♪闇の夜に赤の小犬の声聞けば、踏まれぬ先の糞の用心
♪人の耳にはわんわんわんわんとばかり聞こえるけれども、犬の胸の鏡には「もしもし怪しい人が行ったり来たりしています。ご用心なさいませ」という姿が映る。これは畜生なれども、それぞれの役目を忘れないからである。
犬の胸の鏡はあたかも十六武蔵の駒のごとし。
【ここより下巻】
「福は内、鬼は外」と年末の晩に来る鬼を恐れて豆を撒くとも、胸の鏡の内に自分の心の鬼がゆうゆうと寝転んで煙管をくわえているのに気がつかず、自分の心の鬼を打ち払おうと思う心がないのは浅ましい姿である。慎み心がけるべし。
♪「福は内内、鬼は外外」という声も、仏神のお耳には「欲は内内、慈悲は外外」と聞こえる
言葉は多きは品少なしというように、特に女はぺちゃくちゃべちゃくちゃと口を利かないようにすべし。されど猫が婆を踏みつけたように黙っていても、嫉妬心があるときは女の廃り物なり。この女房の胸の鏡の絵よ。
まあ見よ、いかに見苦しくないか。考えるのが良い。丑の刻参りの蝋燭の明かりで顔まで良く良く見えます。それからごろうじろ。
♪もしもしお前、豆を撒いてしまったら、私が正月ものの麺類を算段してくるから、そうそうつきまとうなよ

In general, distortions of the human heart cannot be corrected by others' opinions. They can only be corrected when one admonishes one's own heart oneself. In the mirror of the heart of such a person with a distorted mind, the image of one's own heart leading one's heart astray is reflected. Therefore, as the poem says:
♪ The heart is what leads the heart astray, do not let your heart trust your heart
This is a good admonishing verse.
♪ Shall I go home or cry, shall I go home or cry ♪♪ While saying the same thing over and over and walking about one block, the heart binds the heart in passionate attachment.
♪ Ah, what dark judgment, could it come to this
♪ When you hear the voice of a red puppy in the dark night, beware of stepping in excrement before being stepped on
♪ To human ears it sounds only like "woof woof woof woof," but in the mirror of the dog's heart is reflected the image saying "Hello, there are suspicious people coming and going. Please be careful." This is because even though they are beasts, they do not forget their respective duties.

Even though we fear the demons that come on New Year's Eve and scatter beans saying "Fortune in, demons out," if we don't notice that in the mirror of our heart the demon of our own mind is leisurely lying down smoking a pipe, and have no intention of driving away the demon of our own heart, this is a shameful state. One should be prudent and mindful.
♪ The voice saying "Fortune in in, demons out out" sounds to the ears of Buddha and gods like "Greed in in, compassion out out"
As they say, many words mean little substance, so especially women should not chatter incessantly. However, even if one stays silent like a cat that stepped on an old woman, when there is jealousy in the heart, a woman becomes worthless. Behold this picture in the mirror of this wife's heart.
Look, how unsightly it is! It's good to think about it. In the candlelight of the ushi no koku mairi (midnight shrine visit), even her face can be seen very clearly. And then, observe carefully.
