現代語訳
友達に会って是非なく無沙汰をした人の所へ行き、定九郎が差し添うような唐傘を一本借りる時は、心にない軽薄な言葉を言い、返す時も、人に物を返す時はこちらから呉れてもやるように、惜しみべんべんだらだらと遅くなることは、皆これ義を失うゆえなり。慎み嗜むべし。
♪土蔵の方で、松の内や先陣問答を語る声が聞こえますが、あれは金の唸りますので、ご挨拶いたしますか。
金持ちの胸の鏡には金が子を産んでいる所の姿が映る。
♪「金がそろそろ虫が付いてきた。はえよしよし、どうぞ三つ子でも産めばいい」
♪猫に小判を見せては、人の者の価値ほどには思わねども、欲の深い人の内のにゃあにゃあは、おのずからにゃあにゃあの胸の鏡にも「欲しい欲しい」と思う欲の山吹色が映る。
♪人に物を与える時の胸の鏡には閻魔様のお姿が映る。
♪人に物を借りる時の胸の鏡には地蔵様のお姿が映る。
♪「かように身貧になりましたは私が因果地蔵、例えば鼻欠け地蔵になる方もあれ。お借り申した物を踏み倒し地蔵には致さず、きっと日切りの地蔵は間違えませんほどに、石の地蔵に判を押したと思し召せ。これが本の地蔵菩薩根究でございます」
♪「島の財布に五十両、鉄砲それへお渡し申し、高立て引きになって返すと言った日には、また早野勘平、早勘平がな」
♪まだ宵に、下女の胸の鏡には布を恋でいる所が映る。

When one goes to visit someone with whom they've unavoidably lost touch after meeting friends, borrowing an umbrella like Sadakuro might carry, they speak insincere and frivolous words, and when returning it, just as when returning anything to someone, they act as if they're giving a gift from their own generosity, being stingy and dawdling with delays - all this stems from losing one's sense of duty. One should be prudent and mindful.
♪From the storehouse direction, voices can be heard telling tales of New Year celebrations and vanguard dialogues, but that is the groaning of money, so shall we pay our respects?
In the mirror of a rich person's heart is reflected the image of money giving birth to offspring.
♪"The money is gradually getting infested with bugs. Go on, do well! Please, even triplets would be fine if you could bear them!"
♪Though showing coins to a cat doesn't make them think of human worth, the "meowing" within greedy people naturally reflects in their meowing hearts the mountain-gold color of desire, thinking "I want it, I want it."
♪In the mirror of one's heart when giving something to another, the figure of Emma (King of Hell) is reflected.
♪In the mirror of one's heart when borrowing something from another, the figure of Jizo (Buddhist deity) is reflected.
♪"Having become so impoverished, I am a karmic Jizo - for example, some become nose-broken Jizo. I won't become a defaulting Jizo who tramples on borrowed things, and the deadline Jizo never makes mistakes, so please consider that a seal has been pressed on this stone Jizo. This is the true Jizo Bodhisattva's fundamental nature."
