現代語訳
人の情としては忠に留まるとかや。飯遣いの身にてはお屋形を大切に思い、何かにつけてお屋形のためになるように心がけて勤めなければならぬはずなり。
大星由良之介はその身は御恩町の遊所に遊び、放蕩の体にて蛸の足をしてやりけれども、胸の鏡の内には仇高師直を討ちたいという怨念、返し忘れず、雄々しい姿が映っている。これを忠臣の鏡と言えり。
♪「ついたての内の福禄寿曰く、講釈物を読む所は、俺もどうか九太夫のようだ」
獅子心中の虫というものは、獅子の腹の内より湧き出でて、ついにその獅子を害する。不忠な人の腹の内には不忠の毒虫が湧き出でて、ついにその身を害する。されば、そんな人でなしの胸の鏡の内には、主人の罰が当たっている斧九太夫が如き者、これなり。
♪「鏡の内にて言う。九太夫、お前の頭は薬缶のようだから、俺が罰を当てたら、えんやかんかんと鳴くであろう」
♪「手を出して、恥をまた掻く娘、叶はどうじゃ」
♪また、お軽は夫のために浮川竹の流れの身となり、その身は穢せとも、胸の鏡の内は穢さず。心では勘平がそばを離れず。「お茶を上がりませぬか」「お煙草の火はございますか」「肩をさすりましょうか」と、終始半時に心を付ける甲斐甲斐しい姿が映る。これを貞女の鏡と言えり。

They say that human emotion ultimately rests in loyalty. As one who serves for meals and wages, one must cherish their master and strive diligently to benefit their lord in all matters.
Oishi Yuranosuke, though his body frequents the pleasure quarters of Go-on town and appears dissolute, making octopus-like gestures, within the mirror of his heart is reflected the vengeful spirit that never forgets his desire to strike down his enemy, the high-ranking Moronao, showing his heroic figure. This is called the mirror of a loyal retainer.

The parasite called "lion's heartworm" springs forth from within the lion's belly and ultimately destroys that lion. Within the belly of a disloyal person, the poisonous worm of disloyalty springs forth and ultimately destroys that person's body. Therefore, in the heart-mirror of such a worthless person is reflected one like Ono Kyudayu, upon whom his master's punishment has fallen.
♪"Speaking from within the mirror: 'Kyudayu, since your head is like a kettle, when I strike you with punishment, you will cry out enya-kan-kan!'"
♪"Reaching out her hand, the daughter who brings shame again - how helpless she is!"
♪Also, Okaru becomes a drifting soul like bamboo on a floating river for her husband's sake. Though her body may be defiled, the mirror of her heart remains pure. In her heart, she never leaves Kanpei's side: "Won't you have some tea?" "Do you have a light for your tobacco?" "Shall I massage your shoulders?" - her devoted figure, constantly attentive throughout every moment, is reflected. This is called the mirror of a chaste woman.
