それつら〳〵おもんはるにしらみが蚊のやうにぶん〳〵と
なかふものならたいていぐわいぶんのわるひ事では
なけれどしらみはなかぬでもつたもの人の心も
そのさまがむねのかゞみにうつらふものなら
たいていあさましき事てはなけれどこれも
ほんぶにはみへぬでもつたものなり
しかし神ほとけや天道の
御目からは善悪邪正（ぜんあくじやしやう）

現代語訳
それをつらつら考えてみると、シラミが蚊のようにブンブンと鳴くものなら、たいてい外聞の悪いことではないけれど、シラミは鳴かないで這うものである。人の心もその様子が胸の鏡に映るものなら、たいてい浅ましいことではないけれど、これも本当には見えないで這うものなのである。
しかし神仏や天道の御目からは、善悪邪正がこの絵のごとく明らかに見えるのである。恐れ慎むべしである。ああ、恐ろしいことよ。
○下の面によ、菩薩ないしん（内心）によ、夜叉というて、顔は菩薩のごとく弁天の申し子が天人の忘れ形見かというほど美しい女も、胸の鏡には恐ろしい鬼の姿が映る。
○また頬高く鼻低く、重ね襟から五摂家を使って、てんとぼたもちの舞台顔と来ている不器量の女も、心立てが良ければ、胸の鏡には楊貴妃、小町のごとき美しい姿が映る。人は美貌よりただ心とはこのことである。
○また我が身に及ばない風儀をうらやむのは大きな迷いである。
♪上見れば及ばぬことの多かりき
下さして暮らせ己が心に
これは良い戒めの歌である。暑中土用の内、高い所から釣りをする気取りにて、心に笠をかぶり、上を見ずに下ばかり見ているのが良い。第一、上を見ればトンビに糞をかけられても損なり。下ばかり見ていれば何ぞ拾う舞いものでもなし。
○また目にもろもろの不浄を見、耳にもろもろの不浄を聞いても、心にもろもろの不浄を思うなというのが御神の教えである。されば目に書物を見、耳に神楽を聞き、口に念仏を申しても、心に悪い不浄を思うのは、たとえば何もろもろの伽羅を嗅いで、心にもろもろの屁を嗅ぐがごとし。
♪わたしが胸の鏡は銭湯屋の看板と来ている
ああ寒い、半だふうりんか
こんにゃくのおでんでも来ればいい
♪右は千両の八文字
左は二十四銅の意地悪
また買い入れてはどうか防具を読むようだ
大体とちゅうに生け［？］まず握り飯を嗅ぐになんぞうなぎの香りを持ちひんや

When one considers this matter thoroughly, if lice were to buzz about like mosquitoes, it would generally not be a matter of bad reputation, but lice crawl without making noise. Similarly, if the state of human hearts could be reflected in the mirror of one's chest, it would generally not be something shameful, but this too crawls about unseen in reality.
However, from the perspective of gods, Buddhas, and heavenly way, good and evil, right and wrong, are clearly visible like in this picture. One should fear and be cautious. Oh, how frightening!
○As for the face below, with a bodhisattva-like interior but yaksha nature, even a woman whose face is so beautiful—like a bodhisattva, as if she were a child of Benzaiten or a memento left by a celestial being—will have the terrifying form of a demon reflected in the mirror of her heart.
○On the other hand, even an unattractive woman with high cheekbones and a low nose, wearing layered collars from the five regent families, with a face like a performer eating sweet rice cakes, if her heart is good, will have a beautiful form like Yang Guifei or Ono no Komachi reflected in the mirror of her heart. "People are judged by their hearts rather than their beauty"—this is exactly what this means.
○Moreover, envying customs and styles beyond one's station is a great delusion.
♪Looking upward, there are so many things beyond reach
Lower your gaze and live according to your own heart
This is a good admonishing song. During the hot summer dog days, like someone fishing from a high place in an affected manner, it is better to wear a hat over one's heart and look only downward, not upward. First of all, if you look up, you'll only suffer loss when a kite drops its droppings on you. If you only look down, there might be something worth picking up.
○Furthermore, the divine teaching is that even if one sees various impurities with the eyes and hears various impurities with the ears, one should not think impure thoughts in the heart. Therefore, even if one reads books with the eyes, hears sacred music with the ears, and recites the nembutsu with the mouth, thinking evil impure thoughts in the heart is like smelling various kinds of aloe wood while imagining various foul odors in one's mind.
♪My heart's mirror is like a public bathhouse sign
Ah, it's cold—is this a half-price wind chime?
It would be nice if some konjac oden came by
♪On the right is a thousand ryō figure-eight
On the left is twenty-four copper coins of spite
And when buying again, it's like reading armor somehow
Generally speaking, in the middle of life... first smelling rice balls, what is this eel fragrance?
