現代語訳
人の心というものは狂言の趣向と役者の生まれつきと違うようなもので、見た目から悪人と見える敵役の役者も、生まれつきの胸の鏡には仏の姿が映り、美しいお姫様を演じる娘役の役者も、もとが男だから胸の鏡は大肌脱ぎの鉢巻きで、マグロの刺身で酒を飲みかける姿が映る。
見た目からばかばかしく見える道化役も、生まれつきの胸の鏡には人品骨柄立派にて、男一匹と見え、目から鼻へ抜けるほど利口そうな姿が映る。
すべて人間は、見かけと心とが相違することがこのとおりである。されば鬼のような男に仏があり、美しい女に鬼あり。鼻の下が長い人といって、べらぼうでもなく、額が立派でも利口とは言い難し。必ずしも見かけによって人を侮るべからず。
♪見物衆御音頭にイヨーイヨー、ヤンヤーヤンヤー
大昔からほめ様の紋切り型はやっぱりこう
こう三人にらみやった所、なんの狂言だか知らず。大昔の役者だから、顔も似たかに似ていないか知らず、紋所もなんだか知らず。二百五、六十になる人があらば、ちょっと聞いてみたいものだ。

イヨーイヨー、とんだ茶釜目。大昔だけ、ほめ様がこう売りなり。
英語訳
The human heart is something different from the plot devices of kyōgen plays and the natural disposition of actors. Even an actor who appears to be a villain from his looks, playing antagonist roles, has the image of Buddha reflected in the mirror of his naturally born heart. And even an actor playing beautiful princess roles in female form (onnagata), since he is originally a man, has reflected in the mirror of his heart the image of someone stripped to the waist with a headband, drinking sake with tuna sashimi.
Even comic actors who appear foolish from their looks have reflected in the mirror of their naturally born hearts an image that shows refined character and breeding, appearing as a true man, with such an intelligent appearance that wit seems to flow from eyes to nose.
In all cases, human beings differ between appearance and heart in just this way. Therefore, there is Buddha-nature in demon-like men, and there are demons in beautiful women. Just because someone has a long philtrum doesn't mean they're stupid, and even someone with a noble forehead cannot necessarily be called intelligent. One should never despise people based on their appearance.
♪To the rhythm of the audience's cheering, "Iyo-iyo, Yan-ya-yan-ya!"
The formulaic praise from ancient times is still just like this:
These three glaring at each other - what kind of play this is, nobody knows. Since they're actors from long ago, whether their faces even resemble [their roles] is unknown, and what their family crests are is also unknown. If there were someone 250 or 260 years old, I'd like to ask them about it.
