現代語訳
手のない遊女たちは、千手観音の手を借りて客を騙している。しかし、借り物の手なので、返しに取りに来る時にたびたび困る。
【遊女】
「このお客は金持ちのようですから、見て騙してやりましょう。気をつけて、早く持っていきなさい」
禿（かむろ）というものは、お手がなるなら「手薄し」と悟る。もし客人は、お手がないなら「少し」と悟るなんて...
【禿】
「それでも取りに来てしまったものを」
【客人】
「恐ろしく手のある人だ。手の蛸のようだ」
無筆な奴が千手観音の手を借りて、公文書や手紙、証文などを書くけれども、仏の手なので梵字ばかりできていて、一つも通用しない。けちな奴の料簡は格別で、ただ返すのも損だと、爪に火を灯し、蝋燭の代わりにする。これが手職の始まりだという、もう久しい話だ。
「梵字と書状を取り違えて、今でも用事といえば、梵字で書状が書けるのか。変だね」
「暑いようだ」
「はて、やかましい蝋燭だ」
英語訳
Courtesans without hands use the hands of Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Avalokiteśvara) to deceive their clients. However, since these are borrowed hands, they are often troubled when someone comes to retrieve them.

A kamuro (young attendant) realizes that if there are hands available, it means "short-handed," and if a customer has no hands, it means "a little"...

"What a frighteningly many-handed person! Like an octopus with hands!"
An illiterate fellow borrows the hands of Senju Kannon to write official documents, letters, and contracts, but since they are Buddha's hands, only Sanskrit characters come out, and none of them are useful. The miserly fellow's logic is exceptional - thinking it would be a loss just to return them, he lights a fire with the fingernails and uses them as candles. This, they say, was the beginning of manual labor - what an old story!
