現代語訳
その頃、勢州鈴鹿山に鬼神が住んで国土の民を悩ませていたので、田村麻呂に宣旨があって「退治せよ」との勅命があった。しかし、千手観音の御手がなくては、一つ矢を放てば千の矢先というけうげん（巧言）ができないので、借りに来られた。
「貸し出して手は一本もございませんが、取り集めてお貸し申そう」
「一本なんぼ（いくら）ぐらいでお貸しなさらないか」
観音は千兵衛と通じて、貸し出した御手を取り集めて田村麻呂にお貸しになった。
千兵衛が御手を改める。
女郎に貸したのは小指がなくなり、握りこぶしで帰る。
これは喧嘩の手傷。
塩屋に貸したのはしおらしく、
紺屋に貸したのは青くなり、
下女に貸したのは糠味噌臭い。
飴屋のは粘々するし、
飯炊きのは霜焼けだらけ。
搗き屋に貸したのは豆だらけ。
人差し指と中指が変な匂いがする。こいつは少し合点がいかないわい。
英語訳
At that time, demons were living in Mount Suzuka in Ise Province, tormenting the people of the land, so there was an imperial decree to Tamura-maro ordering him to "subdue them." However, without the hands of Senju Kannon, he could not achieve the miracle of "one arrow shot becomes a thousand arrowheads," so he came to borrow them.
"We have lent out all hands and don't have even one left, but we'll gather them up and lend them to you."
"For how much per hand will you lend them?"
Kannon worked through Senbei to collect the lent-out hands and loan them to Tamura-maro.
Senbei examines the returned hands:
The one lent to a courtesan is missing its little finger and returns as a clenched fist - this is from fight wounds.
The one lent to a salt vendor has become modest/salty,
The one lent to a dyer has turned blue,
The one lent to a maid smells of rice bran paste,
The candy maker's is all sticky,
The rice cooker's is covered in chilblains,
The one lent to someone who pounds rice is covered in beans.
The index finger and middle finger have a strange smell. This one is a bit puzzling.
