現代語訳
蝦夷八百八町の外に海辺の葦が野の茂った所を切り開き、日本の吉原になぞらえて「新葦原」という女郎屋を取り立てた。義経の軍法より出て町を五々二十五丁町と割り付け、大門口を轅門口と名付けたのは、まさに出塞行の詩を詠むようである。蝦夷は始まったことがないので、ことの外繁盛にて客の絶える事なし。されども金銀が全くなく、代わりに昆布・数の子を使う所なれば、羽振りの良い蝦夷人は昆布・数の子を四つ手駕籠にかつぎ込んで全盛を尽くす。
「タンカンかけらいインヲリスウウラミンテヱル」
両人とも蝦夷中の商人の用いによって大の昆布持ちとなり、日夜に葦原へ通って楽しむ。しかし昆布・数の子は支出せず、荒布・胡麻目ばかり駕籠にて持ち来たり、まき散らし、御吟味取りの者どもより昆布・数の子の真物を受け、結句つりを取って帰りける。蝦夷で鯛を釣るとはこの事なり。
「包組荒布・胡麻目は嵩があって悪いなあ。日本の南領という所だ。」
「インヲリスウも来てかの今夜はちょいと帰りにしよう。」
「これはこれは御来臨ありがた山のとんび、勝原義経には差し合いだ。内々の願いの筋、何分よろしく御取り持ちくださいおかれますよう、へへへ。」
「随分小ちぢ外なら決してなりにくい事さ。」
英語訳
Beyond the 808 districts of Ezo, they cleared the seaside areas overgrown with reeds and established a pleasure quarter called "Shin-Ashihara" (New Reed Plain), modeled after Japan's Yoshiwara. Following Yoshitsune's military methods, they divided the town into sections of 5x5 = 25 districts each, and named the main gate "Enmon-guchi" (Camp Gate), which was like reciting poems about departing for the frontier. Since this was unprecedented in Ezo, it was extraordinarily prosperous with never a shortage of customers. However, since there was no gold or silver at all and kelp and herring roe were used instead, the wealthy Ezo people would load kelp and herring roe into four-bearer palanquins and live in great luxury.

Both men became great kelp magnates through dealings with Ezo merchants and frequented Ashihara day and night for pleasure. However, they didn't spend their good kelp and herring roe, but instead brought only seaweed and small dried sardines in palanquins, scattered them about, received genuine kelp and herring roe from the official inspectors, and ultimately took change before returning home. This is what "fishing for sea bream in Ezo" means.
