現代語訳
さて、御曹司義経公は御兄源二位頼朝公と御仲違いになられ、奥州秀衡が館へ下られたということであるが、実は御仲違いということではない。鎌倉に差し置かれるときは御弟のことゆえ、大名並みにはならず、少なくとも四、五十万石も新設されねばならない。かかる御倹約の御時節なれば、知恵ありの秀衡が案じにて、御仲違いの分にして秀衡が館へ入り申したのである。行く行くは秀衡が奥州五十四郡ともにして遣ろうという狂言なりとぞ。
♪ 義経公は御存じの名将にて、鎌倉の様子も秀衡が腹もよく御存じなれども、やはり知らぬ顔にて一杯に浮かれていらっしゃる。
♪ 秀衡もさる親父にて、この目論見を承知ゆえ、表向きを美しく愛想尽かしなしに逃れんと、蝦夷追討のことを勧め申す。いかさま諸色高直の時節、義経御一人ならず、亀井方、岡井勢するか、武蔵坊、常陸坊、九蝶の奴らに食わせ立てられては、居候にはしかねるはずなり。

♪ いさい、承知の介、早々に打ち立たん、用意用意。
鎌倉の御意強く、きっと討手を差し下さるよしに候えば、ひとまず蝦夷が島へ御落ちあって、かの島御切り従がえ、しかるべく存じ奉ります。かねてかくあらんと存じ、十津軽の下から蝦夷まての抜け穴を拵えて置きました。
英語訳
Now, Lord Yoshitsune had apparently fallen out with his elder brother, Minamoto no Yoritomo (the Second Court Rank), and had gone down to Hidehira's residence in Ōshū. However, this was not actually a genuine falling-out. When stationed in Kamakura, being a younger brother, he would not be treated as equal to the great lords, and would need at least 400,000 to 500,000 koku allocated to him. Given these times of frugality, the wise Hidehira devised a plan: pretending there was a falling-out, he had Yoshitsune come to his residence. The scheme was that eventually Hidehira would give him all fifty-four districts of Ōshū.
♪ Lord Yoshitsune, being the renowned general that you know him to be, well understands both the situation in Kamakura and Hidehira's true intentions, but he pretends ignorance and acts carefree.
♪ Hidehira, being a shrewd old man who understands this plan, recommends an Ezo expedition as a way to gracefully escape without appearing disagreeable. Indeed, in these times of high prices for all goods, it would be difficult to support not only Lord Yoshitsune alone, but also his retainers like Kamei, Okai, Musashibō, Hitachibō, and Kyūchō as guests.

Since Kamakura's intentions are strong and they will certainly send forces against us, I believe it would be best to first retreat to Ezo island and conquer that island. I had anticipated this would happen and have already prepared escape tunnels from Tsugaru all the way to Ezo.
