During the Winter Siege of Osaka, after the camp was moved to Chausu-yama,
the Divine Lord (Tokugawa Ieyasu) rode out alone on horseback to inspect the assault positions outside the castle. Duke Taitoku (Tokugawa Hidetada) heard of this, hurried out, and likewise conducted an inspection. He stopped his horse outside the palisade at the Tenma assault position and observed the conditions within the castle. His retainers came rushing up one after another. Though the castle frequently fired muskets, none struck the persons of either lord. One foot soldier who had advanced in front of the horse was hit by a musket ball and died. When the horse reached the vicinity of the Shinano-no embankment, the musket fire was intense, and no one would climb up onto the embankment. At that time,

the Divine Lord declared "This is how it should be done" and immediately climbed up onto the embankment, so Duke Taitoku also followed and ascended, calmly surveying the four directions. Some days later, both lords again toured the assault positions of the various generals.
