**A (Kinoe)** **Point (·)** — The center of the sun and moon, the center of the earthly realm, the center of the human body, and the center of all things in the universe — all arise from this single point. **B (Kinoto)**                                  **C (Hinoe)** **Line** — Horizontal, Vertical, Arc      Two lines [vertical] · Two lines [diagonal] · Two lines [broken/angular] **D (Hinoto)** **Triangle** — As a form: Triangle [tall isosceles] · Triangle [wide isosceles] · Triangle [scalene or other] **E (Kanoe)** **Surface** — Right triangle (kōko) · Equilateral triangle · Rhombus · Rectangle · Square · Circle **F (Kanoto)** **Solid** It is only upon reaching the solid that form is truly determined. Among solids, the cube (the six-faced body with equal faces on all sides — top, bottom, and four directions) is taken as the standard (*sei*). That Tomonobu independently discovered that musical tuning (*ritsu*) derives from this cube — with its six equal faces — without relying on any written treatise on mathematical principles, is also a most remarkable thing. --- **A diagram showing that the triangle is the beginning of all mathematical operations** Four lines · Four lines (long and short) · Five lines · Six lines (long and short) · Eight lines [The ways in which multiple lines form figures are various, as illustrated here.] Any figure made of four or more lines can be divided into triangles; but when a triangle is further divided, only lines remain and no figure (*katachi*) is formed. Therefore, a triangle cannot be divided further. Hence, the triangle is a natural form that inherently contains the principles (*ri*) of all figures, and this is the reason why three gives rise to all things. That the number three is used in astronomy, calendar-making, solar and lunar eclipses, and all manner of arithmetic is an immovable, fixed principle of heaven and earth — and it is the very reason why the study of musical tuning (*ritsuryō*) takes its law from heaven and earth.
