[Diagrams omitted]
There are no notes (*on*) outside the seven *ritsu* (pentatonic scale degrees). From the cubic body (*hōtai*), one obtains six descending (*gyaku*, "reverse/downward generation") and eight ascending (*jun*, "forward/upward generation") pitches. Counting these produces the twelve *ritsu* (chromatic pitches), as shown below.

This is the semitone neighboring the *kyū* (gong/tonic).
**[Lower right folio]**
Tomonobu (*Chishin*) states: The conventional practice of drawing the angles of the twelve *ritsu* progressively shorter in a linear sequence is unsuitable. I had said that they ought to be arranged in an oval (*tamago-nari*) circular formation, and this has turned out to coincide with the theory of Martin [*Marutin*]. Recently, upon viewing what Lord Ogura Saishō Kintsure had made, it was indeed laid out in a circular form. This diagram follows those precedents, and when considered from the perspective that the earthly realm (*chikai*) takes the form of an oval ellipse, it is entirely reasonable — however, since I have not deeply studied the subject of *ritsu* (musical tuning), I can only discourse on its principles here.
Reconsidering further: even in explaining how two, three, and four are multiplied to perform the function of the *ritsu* — if one takes the *kyū* (tonic, value one) as four, and takes thirteen as two, then to make six the central mean (the "three" at the midpoint), one obtains this through the spread of a geometric ratio (*kōbai*), and so an oval elliptical form would be more fitting and gentle.
**[Left folio]**
A diagram in which the numbers of *ritsu* degrees begin at one and end at sixty-four, with one and sixty-four neighboring each other.
The *kyū* (tonic) of *Huangzhong* (*Ōshō*) is nine *sun* (nine being equivalent to one) — this is the origin of the *ritsu* system. In downward generation (*ka-sei*), one is removed; upward…
