(Continuing from the previous page) In upward generation (*ka-sei*), one is added. By subtracting and adding one-third (*sanbu son'eki*) — (as recorded in the *Lüshi Chunqiu*, *Huainanzi*, *Shiji*, and *Qian Han Shu*) — to understand why the number of pitches (*kaku*) terminates at sixty-four, one uses the diagram on the right. This is the analysis of Tomonobu (the author, Hirano Shigenari). This diagram builds up numbers by means of triangles, accumulating from one to reach sixty-four. Doubling one gives two; doubling two gives four; doubling four gives eight; doubling eight gives sixteen; doubling sixteen gives thirty-two; and doubling thirty-two gives sixty-four. One and sixty-four are neighboring each other, and the sequence reaches its limit at sixty-four. From the two principles of yin and yang in the *Yijing* (*I Ching*), the Four Symbols (*shishō*) are generated; the Four Symbols generate the Eight Trigrams (*hakke*); and from the Eight Trigrams, accumulating further, the sixty-four hexagrams (*rokujūshi ke*) are generated — thus exhausting the principles of all things in heaven and earth. The principle is the same: accumulating from one reaches sixty-four. This is the very beginning from which the numbers of the cubic body (*hōtai*) arise. From this one, they are accumulated up to nine (as in Diagrams A and B). This constitutes only the form (*tai*, body/substance), and there is no variation in pitch (*kyokusetsu*, melodic inflection). Here, when one takes this single unit and adds it to the first-order three to make four, it becomes: four, three, two (as in Diagram C). In general, regarding musical instruments of both refined (*ga*) and popular (*zoku*) music — instruments such as the *kin* (qin/zither), *shitsu* (se/large zither), *shō* (xiao/end-blown flute), *shō* (sheng/mouth organ), *yokobue* (transverse flute), *shakuhachi*, *shamisen*, and *kokyū* — these are in form slender and long. Instruments such as the *ko* (small drum), *taiko* (large drum), *kei* (stone chime), and *dora* (gong) are in form thin and flat (as in Diagram D). The fact that there are heights and lows in the accumulated forms — these are all the result of the angles (*kakudo*) bringing it about… </translation_ja>
