一 香炉（かうろ）に火（ひ）をとりて香炉（かうろ）あつくしてもたれぬときはき
れいなる物（もの）に水（みづ）をいれてかうろを三分ばかり入（いれ）ひやすへし
一 香（かう）をきくに左（ひたり）のゆび三つはかうろのそこに有 人（ひと）さしゆひ
ひとつわきにはづるゝやうにもつなり

現代語訳
一、香炉に火を取って香炉が熱くなって持てない時は、きれいな物に水を入れて香炉を三分ほど入れて冷やすべきです。
一、香を聞くには左の指三つは香炉の底に、人差し指一つは脇に外れるように持つものです。
一、香を聞くのは座上より聞いて一通り回って、また押し返して一通り回し、二度ずつ聞くものです。人数十人より上は一回りで置くべきです。十柱香というのは、香盆に香の名を書いた札と筒とを添えて出すので、いずれの香かということを聞き覚えて札の名を尋ね、筒へ入れるのです。
一、香を聞くには息を荒くして手で香りを招き寄せたり、手をかざしたりして聞いてはいけません。特に女中などは見苦しいものです。ただ何となくそのまま聞いているのがよいのです。
一、香を聞く時、縁に居ても内へ入って聞くべきです。風を嫌うからです。座で扇を使ってはいけません。
香の後で龍涎香、春日野、その他焚き物などを焚く時は銀盤を替えて焚くものです。名香を聞いた銀盤で焚いてはいけません。春日野を聞く時、心得があります。四五人目を回る時には走って飛ぶことがあります。
一、香は「一焚き」と言ってはいけません。「一炷」と言うべきです。

1. When listening to incense, even if sitting on the veranda, one should go inside to listen. This is because wind is avoided. One should not use a fan while seated.
After incense, when burning ambergris, Kasuga-no, or other fragrant materials, the silver plate should be changed for burning. One must not burn on the silver plate used for listening to fine incense. When listening to Kasuga-no, there is a particular technique. When it goes around to the fourth or fifth person, it may run and fly.
1. For incense, one should not say "one burning" but should say "one stick."
