現代語訳
これも万八の話に、箱根山の峠に住んでいた時、氷の厳しい朝、熱い茶を五郎八茶碗へ汲み、茶筅にてかき回していると、茶が冷めるにしたがって氷ってきます。茶筅の動きが止まるようになった時、茶筅を引き上げ、しばらく置いて、どっきりと打ち明けたのが、かの踵を洗う軽石。
英語訳
This is also one of Man-hachi's stories: When he was living at a mountain pass in Hakone, on a morning when the frost was severe, he poured hot tea into a Gorohachi tea bowl and stirred it with a tea whisk. As the tea cooled, it began to freeze. When the tea whisk could no longer move, he pulled it up, left it for a while, and when he knocked it open with a thud, what came out was that pumice stone used for washing heels.
