現代語訳
奥州の湯の原などという辺りも、ことのほか氷りの強い所にて、万八が住んでいたとなりの家のおふくろに、朝々「ばあさま、茶ができた」と言えども聞こえぬ。寒いからのみに来ぬも、もっともその呼ぶ声が壁へ凍り付いたと見えて、春になり、よほど暖かみが来てから、となりとの境の壁が「ばあさま茶ができた」と（声を出し始めた）。
英語訳
In a place called Yunohara in Oshu, which was also an exceptionally cold place with severe frost, Man-hachi lived there. Every morning he would call out to the old woman next door, "Granny, the tea is ready," but she couldn't hear him. It was quite reasonable that she didn't come because of the cold, but it appeared that his calling voice had frozen and stuck to the wall. When spring came and considerable warmth arrived, the wall between the neighboring houses began saying "Granny, the tea is ready."
