現代語訳
万八が蝮を取る工夫は、枯れ木を井桁のように積み上げて、隅々を一つ一つしっかりと結び付け、その中へ入っていると、蝮が人の匂いを嗅ぎ付けて来て、枯れ木に巻き付いた所を見定めて、枯れ木の間から大きな鋸で、すいこうすいこう（と切った）。
英語訳
Man-hachi's scheme for catching vipers was to stack dead wood like well-frames, firmly tying each corner together. When he went inside this structure, the vipers would smell the human scent and come, wrapping themselves around the dead wood. He would watch for this moment, then from between the pieces of wood, he would saw away with a large saw, making "sui-ko, sui-ko" sounds as he cut.
