現代語訳
丈一尺ほど、丸い差し渡し三寸ぐらいの物を渋紙で作り、餅を塗って雪の中へ差し込み、その中へ魚の腸を入れておくと、食べ物に飢えた烏が来て首を突っ込むと、頭に餅がべったりと付いて目が見えなくなるため、うろたえ回って烏飛びに飛ぶところを、万八は逃さずに捕まえてやろう（という仕掛けである）。
万八が壇ノ浦に住んでいた頃、平家の一門が滅亡した所なので、海中で夜な夜な陰火が燃えるのを見定め、紙で袋をたくさん拵えて、陰火をたくさん取って紙の袋へ入れて持ち、風雨の当たらない所へいくらでも吊るして置いたという話である。それは何になりますかと問えば、提灯の代わりにするとのことである。
英語訳
He would make a cylindrical trap about one shaku (30cm) long with a round opening about three sun (9cm) across using persimmon-tanned paper, coat it with mochi (sticky rice cake), and stick it into the snow. He would put fish entrails inside, and when hungry crows came and stuck their heads in, the mochi would stick all over their heads so they couldn't see. As they panicked and flew about wildly, Man-hachi would not let them escape and would catch them.
When Man-hachi lived at Dan-no-ura, since it was the place where the entire Taira clan had perished, he would observe the ghostly fires that burned night after night in the sea. He made many paper bags and collected large quantities of these spirit fires, put them in the paper bags, and hung countless numbers of them in places where wind and rain wouldn't reach. When asked what these were for, he said he used them as substitutes for lanterns.
