現代語訳
万八が唐土（中国）へ渡り、千里も続いている竹藪で、五尺に三尺ほどの穴を掘り、中へ入って上に葛座（むしろ）と戸板を一枚蓋にして置くと、虎がかかって来てみっちりと踏み抜く所を、その足を捕まえて縛る。虎はうろたえ騒いで、また片足を踏み抜く所を同様に捕まえて縛る。とうとう両足ともに縛り、戸板ぐるみ引きずって内へ帰りながら、「戸板、戸板、見なさいな、虎を、戸板、見なさいな」と言えば、虎も怒りの眼光を和らげて、「まず足の細引を、戸板よ」

Man-hachi crossed over to China and in a bamboo grove that stretched for a thousand ri, he dug a hole about five shaku by three shaku (approximately 1.5m by 0.9m). He got inside and placed a straw mat and a wooden door as a lid on top. When a tiger came and stepped firmly through it, he grabbed that foot and tied it up. The tiger panicked and thrashed about, and when it stepped through with the other foot, he caught and tied that one in the same way. Finally, with both feet tied, he dragged it home along with the wooden door, saying "Door, door, look here! A tiger! Door, look here!" The tiger also softened its angry glare and said, "First, the rope around my feet, Door..."
