現代語訳
万八は越後の国にも二百四、五十年住んでいましたが、ここも非常に寒い国です。冬は朝早く起き、籠を背負い、腰に鎌を差して田や沼を歩き回って見ると、雁や鴨がいくらも氷り付いているので、鎌で刈り取って籠へ入れて帰ります。
春の末、氷が溶けた時、あの雁や鴨の足から芽を出すのを、ことごとく取って雑菜にします。
この話について「それは何と申すものでございますか」と問えば、万八は答えて言うには「雁足汁」です。
英語訳
Man'hachi also lived in Echigo Province for two hundred and forty to fifty years, but this too is an extremely cold country. In winter, he would wake up early in the morning, carry a basket on his back, put a sickle at his waist, and walk around the rice fields and marshes. When he found wild geese and ducks frozen solid in great numbers, he would harvest them with his sickle and put them in his basket to take home.
At the end of spring, when the ice melted, sprouts would emerge from the feet of those geese and ducks, and he would gather them all to make into vegetable dishes.
When asked about this story, "What do you call such a thing?" Man'hachi replied, "Goose-foot soup."
