現代語訳
万八が言うには、小鳥を捕るには、秋田俵の中に入り、手首を墨で真っ黒に染め、米を手のひらに載せて俵の内から手首ばかり出しています。
そこへ小鳥が来て米を拾う所を掴んでは俵の中へ入れ、また掴んでは入れ入れして、俵に隙間がなくなった頃、ちょうど日が暮れます。
英語訳
Man'hachi says that to catch small birds, he gets inside an Akita rice straw bale, dyes his wrists completely black with ink, places rice in his palm, and sticks only his wrists out from inside the bale.
When small birds come there to pick up the rice, he catches them and puts them into the bale, catches more and puts them in repeatedly, and by the time the bale becomes so full there's no more space, the sun sets.
