現代語訳
雉を捕るには、人形使いが着る黒子という物を着て、木の陰から縄を出して蛇の真似をして遣っていると、雉子は本物の蛇と思い、羽を上げて威嚇する所を、いよいよ蛇の気取りで、そろりそろりと巻きかけると、雉は威嚇し続けて真似に羽ばたきをしても、一向に切れず、この時万八が声をかけて「雉子兵衛」と捕った。
万八、狐を捕る伝によると、狐がたくさん住む野原へ行き、どっかりと座り、騙されたふりをして、諸事分からない事を言いながら、袂から馬の糞を出して「さても美味しい小豆餅だ」と言うのを狐が見つけて「なんと美味しそうな餅であろう」などと傍へ寄るところを「どっこい」と捕まえた。
ただし、餅を食う時、眉毛に糞が跳ねないようにすべし。
英語訳
To catch pheasants, he wears something called a "kuroko" (black costume) that puppeteers wear, extends a rope from behind a tree shadow and mimics a snake. When the pheasant thinks it's a real snake and raises its wings to intimidate, he acts even more like a snake, slowly coiling around it. The pheasant continues to intimidate and flaps its wings at the imitation, but it doesn't break at all. At this moment, Man'hachi calls out and catches the "pheasant fellow."
According to Man'hachi's method for catching foxes, he goes to a field where many foxes live, sits down heavily, pretends to be deceived, and while saying things that show he doesn't understand various matters, he takes horse dung from his sleeve and says "What delicious azuki bean rice cake this is!" When a fox sees this and thinks "What delicious-looking rice cake that must be!" and approaches nearby, he catches it with a "gotcha!"
However, when eating rice cake, one should be careful not to let dung splash onto the eyebrows.
