私は板町村の入作について年貢並びに水車運上の上納を延引いたしましたので、同村より願い立て、ご用多きご最中に厄介をおかけし、恐れ入って存じ上げます。昨冬、右の年貢取り立ての件について役元より申し参りましたので、早速出向く筈でございましたところ、折節病気に罹り延引いたしました。大切な年貢の件について、全く等閑に心得ている訳ではございませんが、近年特に不景気になり、その上去る午年に類焼し、引き続く凶作により心から困窮いたしましたので、先年同村の作右衛門方への貸金がございまして、数年間元利が滞っておりますゆえ、去る巳年に願い上げましたところ、ご慈悲をもって同村へ内済するよう仰せ渡されましたので、同村役元より的場村六兵衛・弥勒村多右衛門両人へ取り次ぎを相願いし、

立ち入ってもらい、当金並びに年賦済みの規定をして願い下げとなりました。右について年賦の件は毎年同村役元にて取り立て、相渡してくれる筈で、役人中連印の規定書を御上様へも差し上げ、双方で取り替わした件でありまして、作右衛門方へは催促に及ばない取り決めでございましたところ、午年以来一向に渡してもらえませんので、年々掛け合いましたが、承知したとばかりで、何分渡してもらえず難渋いたしましたが、一昨年までは年貢の件は滞りなく上納いたしました。しかるところ去年中の件は、右の田所からわずか籾四升程取り上げただけで皆無同様の状況となり、一方ならぬ難渋の時節でございますので、何卒ご約定の通り右の金子をお取り立てくださり、直ちに年貢へご納入くださいますよう相願いましたが、ご承知いただけませんでしたところ、

Last winter, when the village officials contacted me about collecting the said annual tax, I was supposed to come immediately, but I happened to fall ill and delayed my response. Although this concerns the crucial matter of annual taxes, I do not treat it carelessly, but in recent years I have fallen into particularly difficult financial circumstances. Moreover, in the Year of the Horse there was a fire that spread to my property, followed by consecutive crop failures that caused me great hardship. I had previously lent money to Sakuemon of the same village, and since the principal and interest had been overdue for several years, I petitioned in the Year of the Snake. Through your benevolence, I was instructed to settle privately with the village, so the village officials requested mediation from Rokubei of Matoba village and Taemon of Miroku village.

Regarding this matter, the annual installments were to be collected by the village officials each year and handed over to me, with a regulatory document bearing the joint seals of the officials submitted to the authorities, and an agreement exchanged between both parties. This meant there was no need to press Sakuemon directly for payment. However, since the Year of the Horse, nothing has been paid at all. Although I have negotiated year after year, he only says he understands but never pays anything, causing me great difficulty. Nevertheless, until the year before last, I paid my annual taxes without delay.
