以て推量すへきなり蝦夷は日本地に勝れる広大

### 大河のこと
一、広大な土地には大きな川があり、狭い土地には大きな川はない。日本の西海道〔#1〕には大きな川がなく、東山道〔#2〕には大きな川が多い。これをもって推し量るべきである。蝦夷〔#3〕は日本の土地にまさる広大な土地であるから、大きな川も多く、西蝦夷地〔#4〕にはイシカリ〔#5〕という川があって、蝦夷地第一の大河である。また東蝦夷地〔#6〕にはトカチ〔#7〕という蝦夷地第二の大河がある。まずイシカリ川は、夷舟〔#8〕に乗って源の方へ遡ること、およそ九日にして川上の川辺に

### On Great Rivers
One: In vast lands there are great rivers; in narrow lands there are no great rivers. In the Saikaidō [#1] of Japan there are no great rivers, while in the Tōsandō [#2] there are many. From this, one may draw an inference. Since Ezo [#3] is a far more expansive land than any part of Japan, it too has many great rivers. In the Western Ezo territory [#4], there is a river called Ishikari [#5], which is the greatest river in all of Ezo. In the Eastern Ezo territory [#6], there is a river called Tokachi [#7], which is the second greatest river in Ezo. First, regarding the Ishikari River: boarding an Ezo boat [#8] and traveling upstream toward its source, after approximately nine days one reaches the riverside at the upper reaches of the river—
