一　松前より西の方に日本道凡三十里計りにして見市
　　といふ村有此所に代々岩之助《割書：古は蝦夷人にて其名イハンノ｜シケといふて則乙名なり》

　　は月代を剃らすに蝦夷の体にかへて正月七日に領主へ

一、松前より西の方へ、日本海沿いの道のりおよそ三十里ほどのところに、見市という村がある。この所に代々「岩之助」という百姓がいる。
《割注：古くはアイヌ人であり、その名をイハンノシケといって、すなわち乙名（オトナ）である》
この者は普段は日本人の野郎鬢（やろうびん）にしているが、冬になると月代（さかやき）を剃らずにアイヌの姿に戻り、正月七日に領主へ吉例（きちれい）として挨拶に出る。領主の書院の前庭に荒菰（あらごも）を敷いて、そこに座らせられ、領主から濁り酒をいただく。これはアイヌの遺風（いふう）である。

　　　　　　**General Account of Matsumae**

One item: To the west of Matsumae, approximately thirty *ri* along the coastal road facing the Japan Sea, there is a village called Miichi. In this place there has lived, generation after generation, a farmer known as Iwanosuke.
*(Interlinear note: In former times he was an Ainu, and his name was Iwanno-shike; he held the position of* otona*, i.e., village headman.)*
In ordinary times this man wears his hair in the Japanese *yarō-bin* style, but when winter comes he ceases to shave his *sakayaki* (the shaved crown) and reverts to the appearance of an Ainu, and on the seventh day of the New Year he presents himself before the domain lord as part of an auspicious annual ceremony. A rough straw mat (*aragomo*) is spread in the front garden before the lord's study (*shoin*), and he is made to sit upon it, whereupon he receives *doburoku* (unrefined sake) from the domain lord. This is a surviving custom (*ifū*) of the Ainu people.
