with Hashizume Sansei, residing in the village, as the beginning.
During Lord Yoriyasu's reign, both physicians Suda and Hashizume were summoned and given stipended retainer status, being employed with great favor. On one occasion, Lord Yoriyasu met with Lord Hachisuka Saihiro of Awa Province, and their conversation happened to turn to the matter of Western physicians. When Lord Saihiro said he had not yet found such a person, our lord replied that he fortunately had two Western physicians available, and if desired, he could provide one for service. An agreement was immediately arranged, and Suda Tairei was made to serve the lord of Awa. Tairei went to Awa Province where he was greatly valued, and after serving for several decades, he returned to our domain in his old age.
Suda Tairei promoted smallpox vaccination, which people at the time regarded with half-belief and half-doubt, preventing the spread of smallpox and relieving people of that suffering, which is well known to all. Therefore, even veteran local physicians came to regard Tairei as the founder of vaccination, it is said.
