一供番 中小性と同じく事あるときは主君の前後を警衛す。平素主君外出のときは前後に随従す。また城中広間の次に宿直す。これを次番という。

或る時、伊澤勝三郎・北嶋久吉両名が夜警のとき、日影坂において怪しき賊に出会い、「誰か」と問いかけしとき、有無の返答なく抜刀して伊澤に斬りつけ負傷せしむ。この時北嶋は賊の抜刀に驚きその場を逃げしが、伊澤は負傷にも屈せず渡り合いしも、賊は暗夜に乗じて逸走せりという。翌日前件届出により取り調べの末、北嶋は遂に追放せられたり（追放とは家屋敷を召し上げられ、妻子諸共領地外に追い出すものなり）。

One Attendant (tomban): Like pages, when there are affairs they guard the front and rear of the lord. Normally when the lord goes out, they accompany him front and rear. They also keep night watch in the quarters next to the castle's great hall. This is called "shift duty" (tsugiban).

One Foot Soldier Inspector (ashigaru metsuke): The head of the foot soldiers who instructs them. Normally, day and night, he conducts secret patrols throughout the domain to watch for emergencies and secretly reports to the administrators.
On one occasion, when Izawa Katsusaburo and Kitajima Kyukichi were on night patrol, they encountered a suspicious bandit at Hikage slope. When they called out "Who goes there?" there was no response, and the bandit drew his sword and struck Izawa, wounding him. At this time, Kitajima was startled by the bandit's drawn sword and fled the scene, but Izawa did not yield despite his wound and engaged in combat. However, the bandit took advantage of the dark night and escaped. The next day, following the report of this incident, after investigation, Kitajima was ultimately banished (banishment means having one's house and estate confiscated and being expelled from the domain along with wife and children).
