〇「ヘド」は「オワヘ」島の港口である。島の大きさはおよそ四、五十里はあろうと思われる。旅人はわずか四日間の滞在であったため、その詳細を知ることはできなかった。しかしながら、荒涼とした様子は推し知ることができる。港は東北に面し、背後には険しくそびえ立つ重なった山々を負う。その山の窪んだ凹地には疎らに小さな樹木が生えている。一つの険しい峰では火を噴いている。洋上の船舶はこの火山を遠望して、港への目印としている。その険しく尖った峰は「サンイチ」諸島において旅人の見た景観の中で最も優れたものである。攀じ登るとすれば一里余りの道のりであろう。港口の幅は二十丁余り、両辺には巨岩が群がり立って水面から五、六尺ほど突き出ている。港内は平らな砂地であり、砂と土が合わさった箇所は岸の高さが三、四尺で、蛇行する帯のように港を

横に貫いている。蘇芳や甘蔗（サトウキビ）が至る所に繁茂して林をなしている。遊女屋は林の奥にある。砂上には島民の集落や広商（大きな商館）などがある。椰子の木が群生している。水辺では「ケノ」という艇を舵（かじ）として砂上に並べている。これはその流失を防ぐためである。港の左辺も小さな湾になっており、「ケノ」を停泊させるべきである。

【Right folio】
〇 "Hedo" is the harbor entrance of "Owahe" Island. The size of the island is estimated to be approximately forty to fifty ri. The traveler stayed only four days and was therefore unable to obtain detailed information. Nevertheless, the desolate character of the place can be surmised. The port faces northeast and is backed by a range of steep, towering mountains. In the hollow depressions of these mountains, sparse small trees grow. From one precipitous peak, fire spews forth. Ships at sea use this volcano as a landmark to identify the port. Its sharp, steep peak surpasses all the scenery observed by travelers among the "San'ichi" archipelago. To climb it would be a distance of over one ri. The width of the harbor mouth is over twenty chō; on both sides, massive rocks cluster and protrude five to six shaku above the water surface. The interior of the harbor is flat and sandy, and where sand and soil combine, the shore rises three to four shaku high, winding like a belt across the harbor.

It runs horizontally across the harbor. Sappanwood and sugarcane grow luxuriantly everywhere, forming forests. The brothels are situated behind the forest. On the sand there are settlements of island inhabitants and large trading houses. Coconut palms grow in clusters. At the water's edge, vessels called "Keno" are arranged on the sand to serve as anchors — this is to prevent them from being carried away by the current. The left side of the harbor also forms a small bay, where "Keno" vessels should be moored.
