「ラハイナレナ」は「マオイ」島の要港であって南向きである。その山は北向きに聳え立ち、港から望むと遠い。これに登るには徐々に登らなければならない。太陽に焼かれて草花は少なく、一種の樹木を生やしている。その根は薬剤に用いられるが、その名前は詳しくない。港口の幅は一里ほどで岩石は少ない。また三尺ほどの土の崖が砂を区切っている。岸の上には椰子の林が多い。人家は疎らで密集していない。「アレイ」（島の首長）の館には大砲十余門を並べている。「ミスラハラオイナン」の寺はその近くにある。学校は寺から半里余りの山麓にある。広東の商館は砂の上にある。およそ島民の住居は茅葺きで低く粗末である。アメリカや広東などの建物は土壁で広々としている。それゆえ一目で見渡すと、美しいものと醜いものが入り混じっている。

"Lahainalena" is the main port of "Maui" Island and faces south. Its mountain rises toward the north, appearing distant when viewed from the port. To climb it requires gradual ascent. Scorched by the sun, there is little vegetation, though one type of tree grows there. Its roots are used for medicine, but the name is not known in detail. The width of the harbor entrance is about one ri, with few rocks. There is also an earthen cliff about three feet high that divides the sand. Above the shore there are many coconut groves. The houses are sparse and not densely packed. The mansion of "Alei" (the island chief) has more than ten cannons lined up. The temple of "Misuraharaoina n" is located nearby. The school is located in the foothills about half a ri from the temple. The Guangdong trading post is located on the sand. Generally, the dwellings of the islanders are thatched and low and crude. The buildings of America, Guangdong, and others have earthen walls and are spacious. Therefore, when viewed at a glance, beautiful and ugly structures are intermixed.
