佩剣を抜き、曲げてから放すと真っ直ぐに伸び直る。酋長は口の中で舌打ちして「お前の刀は硬直で曲がらない。我が刀は自在で、鋒先で人を殺すのに十分である。なぜ斬り合いを待つ必要があろうか。しかも『ピストル』『マスケット銃』を撃てば、お前は結局何の役にも立たないではないか」などと言って、かなり不平な様子であった。異国語なので兵士は理解できず、客らが仲に入って百方手を尽くして調停し、「彼は皆様に珍しい物を見せて喜んでもらおうとしているだけで、悪意はない」と告げた。やがて兵士は刀を収め、酋長もまた剣を納めた。さて、漂流者六名の受取証を書けと言う。兵士が証文を書き《この証文は真の文書》、しかも脅迫して言うには「急いで去れ。沿岸の砲台から撃てば必ず撃沈の災いに遭うぞ」と。酋長は大いに冷笑して「砲撃を恐れるような臆病者で遠洋航海ができるものか」と言い、ついに晴れ晴れとして去った。客らは心の中で、兵士が外国人の情勢を理解せず、ただ軽率な態度を露わにし、無礼を重ね、遠路送り届けてくれた厚意に感謝せず、薪水の有無も問わず、恩に報いる贈り物も欠いていることを嘆いた。彼ら外国人は既に大砲の試射も行い、武備は十分に完備している。たった一口の小刀を抜いて、どうして威厳を示すことができようか。この一件は実に我が国の俗人の陋習であって、しばしば聞くことがある。誠に戒め慎むべきことである。
