この時その書庫の工事が大半完成していた。左官職人や大工が入り混じって騒がしい。そもそもこの商人は大富豪として名が四方に知れ渡っている。店の大きさは我が国の五、六千石を食む武士の屋敷に匹敵する。建築の壮麗さに至っては、ほとんど日本にはない。連なった部屋には多く島民を買って奴隷とし、住まわせている。毎日金銀をあちらの倉庫、こちらの倉庫に運び入れている。このように非常に富んでいるけれども、客たちを側に招き、昼食を共にして親しく交わること友人のようで、酒や料理を並べて向かい合って飲み、外見を飾ったり心に城郭を設けるようなことは全くない。
○また十数年前、我が越後の早川家の角長という船が港の右の岩礁に漂着した。中国人がこれを助けて左の岩礁に引き上げようとして破損させてしまった。

その船員の伝吉、長太等は、この商人の斡旋で「サンフランシスコ」に送られ、ついに日本に帰ることができた。客に向かって「帰国したら彼らの無事を報告してくれ」と頼んだ。客が後に「サンフランシスコ」で土人の話を聞くと、前回の漂流民は（すなわち伝吉等である）頑固で、その意図を理解するのが困難だった。およそ良い衣服や美しい帽子などを贈ると、皆これを箱の中に大切にしまって、日本の服を着て日本の木履を履き、身なりを整えて大通りを歩き回る。一市がそのために大笑いした。「お前たちはこれに反して真の異国の客である」と言った。（某氏が言うには、早川の漂流人は今でも一人の名前を覚えており、羅紗の袍を二、三枚と、墨を磨ると金色の光を発する硯石一枚を蔵しているという）
